COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS (CHWs)

Who are CHWs and what do they do?

CHWs are trusted members of the community who…

  • Serve as non-medical, frontline, public health workers who improve community health

  • Have a strong understanding of their clients’ ethnicity, culture, education, background, and life experiences

  • Provide informal counseling and social support

  • Advocate for the needs of their community and assure they receive the services they need

  • Provide culturally appropriate health education and information

  • Serve as a bridge between communities, healthcare workers, and state health departments

 

What are the eight core competencies that CHWs must demonstrate as trusted members of the community?

  • Communication Skills

  • Interpersonal Skills

  • Service Coordination Skills

  • Capacity-Building Skills

  • Advocacy Skills

How can I become a CHW in the state of Texas?

  • Must be a Texas resident

  • Must be 16 years or older

  • Must complete a 160-hour competency-based CHW training program certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)​​​​

    • Most programs cost ~$1000 but you can join ours for FREE!
