What qualifications do I need to participate in the Chinese CHW certification training program?Certification training participant qualifications: 1. Must be a Texas resident aged 16 years or older who can listen, speak, read, and write Mandarin (simplified or traditional Chinese) 2. Citizenship and permanent residence are NOT required (you do not have to be a citizen of the United States or have permanent residence (green card) in order to participate) 3. There are no restrictions on education or background (medical and health-related education is not required) 4. Must be willing to provide cancer-related education and services to Chinese community members 5. Need to have basic computer skills (able to use the Internet, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Email) 6. Need to be able to take online courses

Can my friends also participate in this Chinese CHW certification training program?Yes, as long as they are a Chinese-speaking resident of the state of Texas, at least 16 years old, and able to take online courses. Please make sure they are also aware of the registration deadline and training program completion deadline.

Why have I never heard of the term “Community Health Worker" before?"Although there are over 4,000 officially certified CHWs in Texas, there are only 8 Chinese-speaking CHWs across the state of Texas. This shows that Asian communities have long been ignored by both the United States and Texas governments. As a result, Asian communities have been medically underserved, receiving fewer healthcare education opportunities and services. What if I miss the deadline to register for the Chinese CHW certification training program?The deadline to register is September 30, 2020. If you miss this deadline and would still like to participate in the training program, you may send us an email at tamuchw@gmail.com. Depending on how many spots we have available, we may consider allowing you to participate in the training program.

Do I need any special computer equipment to take part in this Chinese CHW certification training program?Computer requirements: Windows 7,8,10, and Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Leopard, or any newer version Speaker Software: Microsoft Office: The software includes Word and PowerPoint. If you can't buy this software, you can download it from http://www.openoffice.org free OpenOffice, which includes similar products We strongly recommend using Google Chrome as the web browser for this certification training. This browser is relatively secure and provides Internet plug-ins at startup, so you don't need to update them. This course is also available in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari; however, you may need to update your Internet browser.

How much does the Chinese CHW certification training program cost?Our Chinese CHW certification training program is free. Most training programs cost ~$1,000, but if you participate in our program, we will waive this fee for you.

What language is the Chinese CHW certification training program offered in?The training is only offered in Mandarin (simplified Chinese). Due to financial constraints, we have only completed the Mandarin (simplified Chinese) version of the training. If we obtain additional funding in the future, we would be more than happy to make the training in Cantonese, traditional Chinese, or other languages.

How long will it take to finish the Chinese CHW certification training program?This is a 160-hour self-paced training program, so it depends on the schedule you decide to set for yourself. The only requirement is that it must be completed by the deadline.

What do I need to complete in order to get my certificate of course completion?There are 4 things you need to complete-- 1. You must complete all the online modules, online assignments, and online quizzes in the CHW certified training course. 2. You must receive an average grade of at least 60 on the online assignments 3. You must receive an average grade of at least 60 on the post-test quizzes given at the end of each of the 30 modules 4. You must complete a 20-hour internship related to Chinese American health and/or cancer prevention and upload the completed internship form to the training website (we strongly recommend for you to start your internships as early as possible to avoid last minute submissions) We have provided this training to 46 previous trainees. All previous trainees have successfully completed this CHW certification within 3 months. This program is extremely qualified to assist you in your process of becoming a CHW.

How many and who are the community members I should serve after completing the Chinese CHW online certification course?You are encouraged to serve as many Chinese community members as possible. Keep in mind that the Chinese-speaking community members served should reside in Texas, be between the ages of 18 and 75, and should not have any history of cancer. In the three-month online follow-up survey, we will ask you how many community members you have served since the completion of your CHW online certification course. We encourage you to continue serving these community members in the future as a certified CHW.

Will my personal information be protected?Your personal information will be kept confidential. Only our research team will have access to your information. Any future publications related to this training program will not reveal your personal information.

What internships can I complete which meet the Chinese CHW Certification training program requirements?You can complete an internship in the following ways: 1. Work as a volunteer with a health agency/social service agency/Chinese American community organization 2. Work with other CHWs 3. Serve a community center, church, hospital, or school 4. Participate as a volunteer in different community activities, such as Houston Chinese Health Week The internship must be related to Chinese American health and/or cancer prevention. Please note that the internship form must be signed by the relevant organizations or individual. Internship forms can be found on the course internship section of the training website. Please upload your completed form to that section. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, to keep you safe, please avoid crowds during your internship. Since finding an internship can be difficult and time-consuming, we encourage you to look for internships while taking your CHW online certification course.

What kind of incentives can I get if I participate in this Chinese CHW certification training program?To show our appreciation for your support of our program: 1. The first 300 participants who complete the online certification training course and fill out both pre-class and post-class questionnaires, will receive a $25 Amazon eGift card. 2. Three months after completing the course, there will be an online follow-up survey. The first 300 participants that complete this survey will also receive a $25 Amazon eGift card.
